JUNG SHIN GUM-SOOL (劍術 )

Our Sword Style

JungShin Gum Sool, rooted in the artistry of the sword, epitomizes the techniques and ways of ancient Korean Ssabori warriors, drawing inspiration from the Koguryo era. The practice offers insight into a once-thriving swordsmanship that diminished during the 40-year Japanese occupation. Most remaining Korean sword arts are reconstructions that blend ancient Korean texts with Japanese Kenjutsu, the comprehensive term for various traditional sword arts, including sword techniques.

Training in Koguryo JungShin Gum Sool includes solo battlefield techniques and paired kata for practitioners, ranging from full-contact strikes using armor for advanced students to non-contact techniques for beginners. Historical traditions also featured sparring with solid wooden swords (mokgeom), bamboo swords (juk-to), and protective gear (hogu).

Our system integrates Korean and Japanese swordsmanship, enhancing the study with elements from both traditions, such as Battōjutsu for swift sword drawing and Iaijutsu for immediate striking response. We also incorporate Korean disciplines like Kumsool, Kumboup, and Kuhapsool, creating a comprehensive framework that fosters a holistic understanding and mastery of swordsmanship.

Central to our practice are philosophical teachings  emphasizing the unification of body, spirit, and mind. This approach not only builds physical and psychological resilience but also cultivates the character, ethics, and morality of practitioners. Koguryo Gum Sool is more than martial training; it is a transformative journey towards self-mastery, guided by rigorous training and practical application in fencing.

Benefits of Training

Jung Shin Gum Sool students adhere to a code of conduct inspired by the valorous knights of medieval Korea's Koguryo kingdom. This martial art views the sword not just as a weapon but as a symbol of honor and devotion to homeland. Practitioners uphold noble principles that reflect the enduring values of this ancient era.

These principles, derived from the ethos of Koguryo warriors, guide practitioners in cultivating moral fortitude and purpose. The key tenets include:

  1. Cheung (Love for Your Country): This principle instills a deep patriotism and commitment to defending one’s homeland.
  2. Hew (Filial Piety for One's Parents): It emphasizes respect and reverence for parents, recognizing their role in shaping values and character.
  3. Yeah (Respect for Elders): This tenet values the wisdom of elders, promoting a culture of deference and mentorship.
  4. Liee (Honor and Virtue): It calls for maintaining the highest standards of integrity and righteousness, both in and out of combat.
  5. Shin (Justice): This principle advocates for fairness and standing against injustice, using martial skills to promote the greater good.

By embracing these principles, Jung Shin Gum Sool students not only become skilled martial artists but also exemplars of virtue, continuing the legacy of the Koguryo warriors with honor, duty, and service to society.
